Stutzman's Guitar Center began informally in 1952, when founder Eldon Stutzman began expanding his hobby of playing, collecting and repairing stringed instruments.
Conducted from his house on a by-appointment basis at first, the business moved to a small store on Jay Street in Rochester in 1964.
As his collection grew to nearly one thousand instruments it became apparent that Eldon's hobby was growing into a successful business. The Jay Street store, crowded with instruments, was open Saturdays only; repairs and most of the inventory remained at his Spencerport home.
The popularity of folk and acoustic music during the 1960's created great demand, and Eldon Stutzman soon gained a national reputation for honesty, selection, and expert customizing and repair.
In 1974 Eldon's son Dave began working as an apprentice in this father's business: since the elder Stutzman's death in 1976, David has owned and managed the business.
In 1977, the shop moved to its present location in an almost 200 year old building on the West side of Rochester; also in 1977, Dave's new bride Margaret was welcomed into the business; and in 1985, Dave's brother Richard joined as an instrument repairman, keeping the family tradition alive.
In the fall of 1989, a major remodeling of the entire building was finished giving much needed room for a larger showroom, workshop and teaching studios.
